Apply for a 2024 Career Award

The Foundation must receive the candidate’s completed application, including the mentor’s letter of support, before 3:00 pm (PST) on January 26, 2024. Application materials outside of the application form should be submitted as a single PDF attachment to:

The Foundation will notify candidates of the status of their application by March 19, 2024. Finalists will interview with the Scientific Advisory Committee on April 5, 2024. We recommend that you place a hold on your calendar for April 5, 2024, in the event that you are selected as a finalist. Award decisions will be made April 7, 2024. Awards may be activated between July 1, 2024, and September 30, 2024.

2024 Application Instructions

The 2024 application is comprised of two parts: 1) an application form and 2) six additional components that should be submitted in the order presented below in a single PDF.

    1. The candidate’s biosketch and bibliography of relevant publications, if any
      (No need to include copies of published articles.)
    2. Personal statement, not to exceed two pages
      Briefly describe why your experience and qualifications make you particularly well suited for the award. Describe in non-technical terms the research project or type of research you are interested in pursuing and the significance of the proposed research. Finally, state how the award will assist in your future career path.
    3. Technical statement of proposed research, not to exceed five single-spaced pages (excluding bibliography)
      Outline the research problem, the hypotheses, methodology, expected results and timeline for the research project.
    4. Mentor’s NIH biosketch
      In addition, include a list of the following: (1) no more than 15 publications relevant to the candidate’s area of interest; (2) current and pending support for the laboratory; and (3) former trainees and their current positions.
    5. Mentor’s Letter of Recommendation (maximum of four pages)
      Provide a detailed, personalized appraisal of the candidate’s qualifications. Outline the specific mentorship plan to help the candidate further develop his/her scientific career and promote his/her independence. For candidates with clinical responsibilities, explain how their time will be made available to pursue research. Include a brief description of the research facilities and equipment available to the candidate.
